PETALING JAYA: Police will investigate the recent "cross" protest at a church in Taman Medan, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pix) on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister said the Cabinet discussed the protest by a group of 50 residents against a new church in a shoplot after the congregation put up a cross on the building.
“If the protesters violate the country’s laws, action can be taken against them under the Sedition Act or other existing laws.
“The Cabinet feels that members of the group should have discussed about the issue with the authorities if they had objections and not take action that could cause anxiety among the multiracial society in Malaysia,” Najib said in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the people must obey the laws of the country and respect the religious practices of various faiths as enshrined in the Constitution.
“We have to practise tolerance and respect for other races from different religious backgrounds. The Sedition Act is aimed at maintaining peace and harmony of all races in the country and it protects all races and religions,” he added.
On Sunday, the group, which gathered at about 10am as church service was going on, contended that the sight of the cross in a largely Muslim area challenged Islam and could influence younger minds.
They were later pacified after a village leader who spoke with the church pastor.
The church then agreed to take down the cross.
On Monday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the protesters can face action under the Sedition Act.
"Regardless of who, if anyone touches on any religion, they are subject to the Sedition Act," he said.
