MUADZAM SHAH: PAS has named state Youth chief Nazri Ahmad as its candidate for the Rompin by-election.
Nazri, 40, is also the Rompin PAS division chief.
PAS vice-president Salahuddin Ayub made the announcement during a political ceramah in Bandar Satelit near here before some 1,000 members and supporters on Monday.
Also present were PAS vice-president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, PAS elections director Dr Hatta Ramli and Temerloh MP Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi.
But top central leaders from DAP and PKR were not present.
Tuan Ibrahim said the Syura Council had given the green light for Nazri to contest after going through five vetting processes.
He said Nazri was selected due to his good character and religious background.
Nazri is a Syariah studies graduate from Al-Azhar University, Egypt.
He is an upcoming youth leader, affable, down to earth, and received strong support from the Ulama camp.
However, Nazri has been given an uphill task to make inroads into the Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold.
He will face Rompin Umno division deputy chief Datuk Hasan Arifin in the May 5 polls.
Nomination for the by-election has been set for April 22.
The seat fell vacant after incumbent Tan Sri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis was killed along with five other people in a helicopter crash on April 4 near Semenyih.
In the last general election, BN won the seat with a thumping 15,114-vote majority.
