GEORGE TOWN: A 38-year-old female bank manager was among six people arrested during a bust at a drug lab in Gelugor, which also saw the seizure of RM500,000 worth of narcotics and a Luger pistol.
Besides the 9mm-calibre pistol, police found a fully loaded magazine and a box of ammunition, which they believe belonged to a member of the drug producing and trafficking syndicate, and four cars worth about RM155,000.
Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi said a team from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and Bukit Aman Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) had first raided a flat in Jelutong on Saturday.
During the raid, he said 16 packets of heroin weighing 6.47kg were confiscated and two suspects, aged 48 and 50, were arrested.
“Following information provided by them, we raided another house in Sungai Petani, which was being used as a drug laboratory.
“We detained a couple in the house together with 59g of heroin, 23.8kg of caffeine and various types of chemicals as well as drug processing paraphernalia,” he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters yesterday.
The bank manager is the wife of the 48-year-old man arrested in the second house.
On the same day, SDCP Abdul Rahim said authorities ambushed a house in Jalan Faraday, Gelugor, at 9.35pm, where they recovered the weapon and detained another two suspects.
“We also seized 460g of heroin, 860g of heroin base, 18.7kg of caffeine, various chemicals and equipment to process the drugs.
“We believe the syndicate has been active for the past six months with the drugs mainly for the northern region market,” he said.
SDCP Abdul Rahim urged the public to contact the police hotline at 04-269 1999 or any station should they come across any unusual odour or anything suspicious in their area.
All six people have been put under remand until Saturday to help with the probe under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act for trafficking, which carries the mandatory death sentence, and for unlawful possession of firearms.
