KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- The continuous monsoon season may affect the supply of fish and vegetables, especially with the Chinese New Year next month.
Several fish and vegetable suppliers hope the government will give a helping hand if the weather does not change for the better, with imports to supplement local production.
A fish supplier at the Kuala Lumpur Wholesale Market, identified only as Chong, said the supply of fish was falling as local fishermen, especially in the East Coast could not go out to sea due to bad weather and choppy seas.
His stock of fish was left with only mackerel, pomfret, sea bass, sardine and cob, with stocks falling fast while river fish such as catfish was hard to come by, he told Bernama.
His concern was shared by Selayang market fish monger, Shamsuri Othman, who has to raise prices as the supply of fish dropped further.
"We are worried fish supply may not be adequate in the city, especially during the coming festive season, even though we could replenish our supply at the moment," he said.
Meanwhile, a vegetable trader at the Chow Kit market, identified only as Ooi, said prices of vegetables such as spinach, mustard and kailan had gone up due to shortage in supply.
"We obtain our supplies from local farmers, as well as imports from India and China but the prices depend on quality and type.
"Local vegetables such as lady's finger, mustard, kailan and tomato have gone up by between RM1 to RM3 per kg.
"Lady's finger is sold at RM10 per kg now, as compared to RM6 earlier, while mustard is sold at RM3, compared to RM2 and kailan at RM8, as compared to RM5 previously," he said.
